Geghard

Geghard Monastery, which full name is Gegardavank - monastery of lance, is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Armenia. The name of the Monastery got his name from the lace with which the body of Jesus was hurt. It is unique as it is surrounded by huge cliffs and by a canyon from the fourth side. A part of the church is totally in the cave. Today the monastery complex is located at the end of the paved road, and the walk up from the parking lot is lined with women selling sweet bread, sheets of dried fruit, sweet sujukh (grape molasses covered strings of walnuts) and various souvenirs. A group of musicians usually plays for a few seconds as visitors approach, perhaps willing to play longer for money.
